SERVICES

-DEVELOPMENTAL EDITING-
Price: $0.02/word*
Speed: 10,000-15,000 words/day

Developmental editing focuses on improving your story itself. I work to both identify the core issues of a story and to also provide numerous suggestions to solve those narrative issues. I provide the additional service of highlighting what my authors do best, and what they most need to improve upon to achieve their maximum potential. Because this service entails a great deal of changes to the story, developmental editing does not include a proofreading component.

As an overview, this service includes:

  • Narrative checks: I will make sure that the story flows well, is understandable, well-ordered, and, most importantly, is compelling

  • Internal consistency checks: I will constantly check to confirm that the narrative makes sense, that characters always stay in character, and that information is consistent within your story’s universe

  • Fact and believability checking: I will make sure that your story is factually accurate, including checking for scientific and mathematical accuracy, if applicable, and that your story is reasonably believable

  • Writing checks: I will check to see if your writing style fits within its genre, and to see if your technical execution is good overall

  • Developmental notes: I will email you with my developmental notes and provide for you a summary of the most important issues and my suggestions in addition to the commented document

  • A Skype conversation: I provide free 30-minute Skype consultations per manuscript upon request, at no extra charge

-DEVELOPMENTAL CONSULTATION-
Price: $50/hour*
Speed: 90 minutes per typical Skype session

Developmental consultations are designed for authors who are struggling to finish or even start a manuscript. E-mail me your work before the session so that I can get a feel for your writing, and I will work with you over Skype to get your story moving, to provide a structure to get your work on track, and provide any other support you need as an author to turn your draft into a published novel!

As an overview, this service includes:

  • Creative Support: I can help you brainstorm new ideas and further develop your own ideas to tease out what works best for your story, as well as helping you to trim and rewrite sections where necessary

  • Writing Support: I will help you with the technical aspects of your writing, such as your flow, grammar, and word choice, help you fact check and maintain internal consistency, and help with the believability and organization of your plot

  • Author Support: I can help you identify your strengths and unique style, give constructive criticism to improve in areas you need to work on, aid with your organization and time-management skills, and help you push through writer’s block

-COPY EDITING-
Price: $0.016/word*
Speed: 15,000 words/day

Copy editing involves proofreading along with advice for improving your clarity, flow and syntax. Basic fact-checking and fixing of simple logical issues (i.e. non sequitors) is also included. This is the middle-of-the-road approach between developmental editing and simple proofreading.

As an overview, this service includes:

  • Proofreading: I will search for and fix any spelling errors or word misuses, and will make sure that your writing is grammatically correct and consistent

  • Writing checks: I will provide suggestions where necessary to improve the clarity and flow of your writing

  • Basic fact and narrative checking: I will constantly check to confirm that the narrative makes sense, that characters always stay in character, and that information is consistent within your story’s universe

-PROOFREADING-
Price$0.0125/word*
Speed: 20,000 words/day

Proofreading is my most basic service, which involves spelling, grammar, punctuation and word usage checks. Getting your document checked by a professional proofreader is a must before publication!

As an overview, this service includes:

  • Proofreading: I will search for and fix any spelling errors or word misuses, and will make sure that your writing is grammatically correct and consistent

FAQ

What genres will you accept?

I accept all genres of fiction, including erotica, as well as literary fiction and non-fiction.

Do you provide sample edits?

Yes, I will provide sample edits of 1,000-1,500 words free of charge for my proofreading and copy editing services.

Please note: I do not offer sample edits for developmental editing, as 1,000-1,500 words is not enough content for me to give a proper preview of that service.

Do you edit short stories?

Yes, at the same rates as for any other project, and there is no minimum project cost. Availability is limited, however.

When is your next availability?

Please contact me to inquire about availability. If you are unable to make your scheduled date, please contact me as soon as possible so that we can reschedule!

Do you require a deposit?

A non-refundable initial deposit of 25% is required on all projects, which also acts as a reservation fee. The remaining 75% of the project cost will be billed upon completing your edit. Please note that I cannot add your project to my schedule until I receive the deposit.

How will I be billed?

You will receive an invoice from PayPal for the deposit at the time of scheduling, and another for the balance when the project is complete, both due upon receipt. Your completed project cannot be returned until full payment has been received. Please note that payments are only accepted through PayPal at this time.

Do you accept rush jobs?

Depending on my schedule/availability, I usually am able to accept rush jobs. There is an additional 50% fee for such projects.

What file types do you accept?

You can submit your work as a .pdf, .doc, .docx, .rtf, or as a .scriv.

How soon before my scheduled edit do I need to get my manuscript to you?

I need to receive your manuscript at least 24 hours prior to 12:00 p.m. EST on your scheduled start date. This gives us time to ask questions about the process, to finalize the expected completion date, and to make sure that I will be able to work full time on your manuscript without spending part of a day waiting!

If I do not receive your manuscript at least 24 hours in advance and I have not heard from you, your project may potentially be canceled and you may forfeit your initial deposit.

If there is a possibility you will be unable to make your date, notify me immediately so that we can discuss it. Please keep in contact with me!

Is there a contract I need to sign?

No. I do not use a formal contract, as most authors want their projects completed long before a formal contract has time to go through the proper proceedings.

What should I do if I disagree with some of the changes you think I should make?

No problem! Feel free to pick and choose what changes you want to make. My job is to give you suggestions on your manuscript so that your story comes through as clearly and as professionally as possible. It’s your writing, and you have the final say for what will be your published product. I’m just here to help you!

ABOUT ME

Hi! I’m Audrey Logsdon. Since I started The Indie Editor in 2014, I have edited more than 100 books for over 40 authors, with genres spanning from science fiction and fantasy to erotica. I am a member of the Editorial Freelance Association, have been published in an international academic journal, and have a Bachelor of Science Degree from North Carolina State University, where I graduated magna cum laude.

While I can and have edited books in any genre, I specialize in speculative fiction editing. Science fiction is where I have the most expertise due to my knowledge of mathematics and physics, but I am also particularly suited for horror and fantasy writing. Those same qualifications make me a high-quality editor for nonfiction, particularly for papers in academia.

When I’m not editing, I am painting for clients or for my personal portfolio, composing music, or reading for pleasure!
